School-based Health Centers
St. Patrick Hospital developed its School-Based Health Centers in six Calcasieu Parish Schools to help meet student health needs through early intervention, diagnosis and treatment to prevent serious health problems in the future. Each center is staffed with a primary care physician, nurses, social workers, an office coordinator and a manager, and provides students with on-site access to a broad range of medical services, including:
- Preventive health screenings and immunizations.
- Diagnosis and treatment of illnesses and injuries.
- Mental health, family counseling and social services.
- Nutrition services and consultation.
- Referrals to specialty care.
To enroll a child in one of the centers, parents or guardians fill out consent forms and select which health services they want the child to receive. The staff is available to answer questions and provide information and advice about treatments, medication and follow-up care.
The SPIRIT Team
The CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital SPIRIT Team program is an interactive and motivational health and safety education program designed for school-aged children. The goal of the program is to creatively and effectively teach students the importance of building and maintaining a healthy and safe lifestyle. With the help of the three very special SPIRIT Team mascots, "Veggie Reggie," "Workout Wendy," and "Safety Miles," students in the program are inspirationally guided through fun lessons on topics such as proper nutrition, self-esteem and manners, the importance of exercise, hygiene, drug abuse, injury and violence prevention.
The SPIRIT Team, a project of the CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital School Based Health Centers, is made by a grant from the Children's Miracle Network.
